How does rank tracking work for Google and AI search

SearchTracking checks Google positions for your keyword, location, and device. It records AI citations and brand mentions alongside those rankings within your monthly AI answer allowance. These answers explain what each result means and how to choose your setup.

02

01

What does a rank tracker measure?

A rank tracker records where a page from your domain appears in Google's results for a particular keyword, location, and device. SearchTracking checks the top 100 and keeps daily position history so you can compare changes.

02

How often do Google positions update?

Google positions update daily for each tracked keyword, location, and device. A daily check records a result at that run; it does not describe every result a searcher sees throughout the day.

03

Why can the tracked position differ from my own search?

Google results depend on location, device, timing, and personalization. Compare searches using the same keyword, location, and device, and treat the recorded position as the result of that check.

04

What does a result outside the top 100 mean?

It means the check does not find a page from your domain within the first 100 positions for that keyword, location, and device. It does not mean your site is absent from Google or that the page cannot rank elsewhere.

05

Which SERP features does the report show?

The report tracks map packs, featured snippets, People Also Ask, video, shopping, and AI Overview presence, including which features your domain owns. These features add context to the position rather than replacing it.

06

Can I bring in Google Search Console queries?

Yes. Google Search Console import brings clicks, impressions, and CTR beside tracked positions. It also helps you find queries that already receive impressions but are missing from your tracked keyword list.

01

Which AI answers does SearchTracking check?

SearchTracking checks Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity. Every plan includes AI answer checks, with a separate monthly allowance for the number of answers recorded.

02

What counts as a brand mention or a domain citation?

A brand mention means the answer names your brand. A domain citation means the answer links to or cites your domain. The report records these outcomes and the position of the mention for that source and check.

03

Does a good Google position guarantee an AI mention?

No. Google rankings, AI Overview citations, and assistant mentions are separate signals. A page can rank well without appearing in an AI answer, which is why the report places these results beside each other.

04

Will every AI run return the same answer?

No. AI answers vary between runs. A recorded answer shows whether your brand is named or your domain is cited in that check, plus the position of the mention. It does not guarantee that every searcher receives the same answer.

05

Do AI checks run for every keyword every day?

AI checks run alongside daily tracking within your plan's monthly allowance. The allowance does not cover every keyword across every source every day. A day without a check is different from a checked answer without a mention.

06

What counts as one AI answer check?

One recorded answer for one keyword question from one source in one run counts as one AI answer check. Each source counts separately, and an answer without your brand still counts. Checking all three sources for the same question uses three checks.

See the AI visibility tool for how citations and mentions appear in the report.

04

01

Which locations can I track?

Track Google positions by country or state on every plan. Team, Agency, and Enterprise also support city and ZIP tracking, so local results have their own location context.

02

Can I track desktop and mobile separately?

Yes. Desktop and mobile have separate positions and histories. Tracking both for the same keyword and location uses two tracked keywords, because each device has its own daily check.

03

What counts as one tracked keyword?

One keyword plus one location plus one device, tracked daily, counts as one tracked keyword. The same phrase in another location or on another device uses another tracked keyword.

Choose a local rank tracker setup that matches the areas you serve.

05

01

Do I need a complex setup to read the report?

No. Add a domain and keyword list, choose locations and devices, then read the daily table. Tags, groups, chart notes, and alerts help you organize the work without assembling positions by hand.

02

Can I put my logo and domain on reports?

Yes. Agency and Enterprise include white-label reports with your logo, colors, and domain. You can share scheduled PDFs and live report links in your reporting workflow.

03

Can clients view their own reports?

Yes. Agency and Enterprise include client viewer logins. These let clients view their own reports while your team uses roles to manage access and editing.

04

Can I compare competitor rankings?

Yes. Team, Agency, and Enterprise include tracking for 5 competitor domains per project. Their positions sit beside your results, and AI checks record which competitors appear in answers.

05

Which alerts and exports are included?

Every plan includes email drop alerts, a daily digest option, scheduled PDF reports, live report links, and CSV export. Team and above add Slack alerts. Agency and Enterprise also include API access.

The agency rank tracker brings client projects, reporting, and access together.

01

How much does SearchTracking cost?

Monthly billing is $49 for Solo, $129 for Team, $299 for Agency, and $799 for Enterprise. Yearly billing is $288, $768, $1,788, and $4,788 respectively, shown as monthly equivalents of $24, $64, $149, and $399. All prices are in USD.

02

How many keywords, AI checks, and projects does each plan include?

Solo includes 100 keywords tracked daily, 100 AI answer checks per month, and 3 projects. Team includes 300, 200, and 10. Agency includes 700 keywords, 400 AI checks, and unlimited projects. Enterprise includes 2,000 keywords, 600 AI checks, and unlimited projects.

03

Do you charge for each team member?

No. Every plan includes unlimited seats. Choose a plan based on daily keyword capacity, monthly AI answer checks, projects, and features.

04

Can I check rankings before creating an account?

Yes. The one-time demo checks three keywords for your domain and location without a card. It shows Google desktop positions, with the first keyword's ranking URL and SERP features. Additional details and AI columns are locked. When live data is not available for a check, your keywords appear with their positions locked until you create your account.

05

Can I cancel and are payments refundable?

You can cancel to stop renewal. Payments are final, with exceptions only for a duplicate charge, a proven unauthorised charge, or complete service failure. There is no general refund guarantee.

07

01

How do I control team access?

Use owner, editor, and viewer roles to match access to each person's work. Agency and Enterprise add client viewer logins. Enterprise adds SSO through SAML and an audit log.

02

Does checking a domain make my client data public?

No. A domain check does not publish your keyword list or account data. You control report sharing and access through account roles and, on Agency and Enterprise, client viewer logins.

03

Where can I review data handling before choosing a plan?

The security page explains account access and data handling. Enterprise also includes a security questionnaire pack, priority support, and invoice billing for organizational requirements.
